Culturally responsive teaching is not something we can codify; rather, it’s an ongoing process of learning and adapting.
The Culturally Responsive Instruction Observation Protocol (CRIOP) is both an observation tool and a framework for instruction. It was developed from a comprehensive review of the literature and is an empowerment model for teachers and students. CRIOP emphasizes academic language development and multi-linguistic flexibility, while also seeks to sustain students’ cultural and linguistic identities. It is a comprehensive framework for classrooms, that involves the following six elements:
- Classroom Relationships
- Family Collaboration
- Critical Consciousness
