Three Distance Learning Lessons To Boost Student Achievement.

The Challenge

Like every other school during the 2020 school year, the School of Extended Educational Options (SEEO) was forced to make the difficult decision to move students into extended distance learning periods during the Covid-19 school closures.  They needed to extend their management and monitoring of student engagement into the virtual learning space in order to maintain the progress they had made.

  • Monitored student engagement online across the learning management and curriculum delivery platforms already in place.

  • Documented student progress and acknowledged appropriate behaviors using a digital token economy for their participation in real time.

  • Identified those students not participating sooner, in order to deliver proactive interventions and support more effectively.

  • Utilized centralized communication via email and/or text messages to better communicate with and involve families in the distance learning process.

The Solution

  1. Keep students progressing towards their goals by monitoring participation, engagement, and growth.
  2. Communicate expectations clearly, acknowledge and reinforce appropriate behavior, and intervene with issues early.
  3. Partner with Parents, Guardians and Student Families to keep lines of communication open.
  4. Use insightful data to drive decisions and promote better student outcomes and achievement.
