Having previously lived in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, I know there’s no shortage of things to see, eat, and experience across the Metroplex. DFW is huge, so you could easily spend days exploring. But if you have a little extra time during your visit, there are a few Dallas spots I always recommend.

Whether you’re interested in science, outdoor spaces, great food, live music, or just getting out for a walk or run, these are some of my favorites.

Of course, the reason many of us will be in Dallas is the 2026 Texas Public Charter Schools Conference, happening September 28–30, 2026. SchoolMint will be there at Booth 455, and we’ll also be sharing ideas around one of the biggest challenges facing charter schools today: turning family interest into sustainable enrollment growth. You can read more about what SchoolMint has planned for TPCSC 2026 before the conference (or reserve time with our team while you’re in Dallas).

1. Discover the Perot Museum of Nature and Science

If you enjoy learning something new while you explore, the Perot Museum of Nature and Science is well worth a visit.

It’s one of those places that genuinely works for all ages. The exhibits cover everything from dinosaurs and the natural world to space, energy, engineering, and the human body, with plenty of interactive experiences along the way.

Whether you’re traveling with kids or simply curious yourself, it’s an easy place to spend a few hours. I especially recommend it if you’re looking for an indoor activity during one of those famously hot Texas afternoons.

2. Take a Break at Klyde Warren Park

Right in the middle of downtown Dallas, Klyde Warren Park is a great place to get outside and enjoy some of the energy of the city.

One of the things I like about the park is that there’s usually something going on. You can grab something to eat from one of the food trucks, find a spot to relax, play a game, or check out one of the activities or events happening in the park.

It’s also a nice change of pace if you’ve spent most of your day indoors or in meetings. Grab a refreshment, sit outside for a while, and enjoy downtown Dallas from a completely different perspective.

3. Walk or Run the Trinity Strand Trail

If you like to get outside and explore on foot, the Trinity Strand Trail is a great option, especially since it’s right next to the hotel.

The trail makes it easy to fit in a walk or run without going far, whether you want to get moving before the day starts or unwind after meetings and activities. It’s a convenient way to enjoy some fresh air, get a little exercise, and see another side of Dallas while staying close by.

If you only have a short window of free time, this is one of the easiest things to work into your schedule.

4. Cross the Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge and Dine at Trinity Groves

For one of my favorite Dallas combinations, make your way across the Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge toward Trinity Groves.

The bridge is one of the most recognizable parts of the Dallas skyline, and the area offers some great views back toward downtown.

Then comes the best part: the food.

Trinity Groves is a haven for foodies, with several restaurants and bars to choose from. It’s a fun area to explore when you aren’t sure exactly what you’re in the mood for and want to see what catches your eye.

If you can time your visit around dinner, even better. Take in the skyline, find a restaurant that looks good, and enjoy the evening.

5. Experience the Music and Food of Deep Ellum

If you want to experience a livelier side of Dallas, head to Deep Ellum.

This historic neighborhood has long been associated with the Dallas music scene, and it’s a great place to hear live music, grab a bite, or spend an evening exploring.

The neighborhood has plenty of personality, with music venues, restaurants, bars, murals, and local businesses all packed into the area. I’d recommend coming hungry, giving yourself time to wander, and checking to see who’s playing while you’re there.

Deep Ellum is especially fun in the evening when the neighborhood really comes alive.

A Few Hours Can Give You a Great Taste of Dallas

One thing I learned from living in DFW is that you’re never going to experience the whole Metroplex in one trip. There’s simply too much to do.

But you don’t have to see everything to get a feel for the area.

Explore the Perot Museum, spend some time outside at Klyde Warren Park, take a walk or run on the Trinity Strand Trail, cross the Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge for dinner at Trinity Groves, or finish your day with food and music in Deep Ellum.

Any one of these will give you a little taste of what makes Dallas such a fun place to visit. And if you have time for more than one, even better.

One local tip: DFW covers a lot of ground, so check drive times before you head out. Texas distances have a way of being a little longer than they look on the map!
