It’s almost time for NSPRA 2026, which means school communicators from across the country are getting ready to pack their bags, finalize their session schedules, and head to New Orleans. And if you’ve ever been to “The Big Easy,” you know this isn’t the kind of city where you simply go from hotel room to conference session and back again.

There’s too much to see. Too much history. Too much music. Too much architecture. Too many “wait, should we walk over there?” moments.

So, as you get ready for the 2026 NSPRA National Seminar, taking place July 19–22, 2026, we asked the SchoolMint team for a few favorite stops attendees may want to add to their visit. This time, our list is a little less food-focused and a little more “how do I make the most of being in New Orleans between sessions?”

If you’re looking for restaurant ideas, you can also check out our earlier list of SchoolMint staff picks for New Orleans stops during NCSC26 last month.

Now, for NSPRA, we wanted to focus more on attractions, neighborhoods, history, and easy conference-schedule add-ons.

While you’re building your NSPRA schedule, don’t forget to visit SchoolMint at Booth 505. We shared more about what we’re bringing to NSPRA in our SchoolMint at NSPRA 2026 preview, including how we’re helping school communicators connect family engagement, student recruitment, and enrollment growth.

We’d love to meet you, talk enrollment growth, and hear what your communications team is focused on this year. Plus, when you book and attend a meeting with us, we’ll enter you for a chance to win one of two $100 Visa gift cards!

1. For the “I Want the Classic New Orleans Walk” Person

Start with: The French Quarter, Jackson Square, and the Riverfront

If this is your first time in New Orleans, the French Quarter is the obvious place to start for a reason. It’s walkable, historic, colorful, and full of the architecture, music, street life, and unexpected little moments that make the city feel so distinct. You can wander through Jackson Square, see the St. Louis Cathedral, walk along the riverfront, browse shops and galleries, or just enjoy the scenic route.

This is a great option if you have a window of free time and want something that feels very New Orleans without requiring much planning. Go here if your ideal conference break is less “structured tour” and more “let’s walk, look around, and see where we end up.”

2. For the “Give Me Pretty Streets and a Streetcar Ride” Crowd

Try: The St. Charles Avenue streetcar and the Garden District

If you want to see a different side of New Orleans, make time for the Garden District. The St. Charles Avenue streetcar is one of the easiest ways to slow down and take in the city. Along the way, you’ll pass oak-lined streets, historic homes, and a quieter, more residential side of New Orleans that feels like a nice reset after a full day of conference sessions.

Once you’re in the Garden District, give yourself time to walk around, look at the architecture, and pop over to Magazine Street if you want shopping, coffee, or a casual place to regroup with colleagues. This is a strong pick if you want something low-key, scenic, and easy to do with a group.

3. For the History-Minded Communicator

Visit: The National WWII Museum

The National WWII Museum is a great New Orleans stop if you have a larger block of time during your visit. It’s one of the city’s major museum experiences and a powerful option for anyone who wants something immersive, reflective, and substantial between conference commitments.

This is not the “quick 20-minute stop” on the list. It’s the one to choose if you have a free afternoon or want to build in time before or after the seminar.

4. For the Art, Green Space, and “I Need a Breather” Person

Try: City Park, the New Orleans Museum of Art, or the Besthoff Sculpture Garden

Conferences are energizing, but they can also be a lot.

If you need a little space, City Park is a great option. It gives you room to walk, reset, and experience a greener side of New Orleans. Depending on your schedule, you can keep it simple with a stroll or make it more of an outing by visiting the New Orleans Museum of Art or the Besthoff Sculpture Garden.

This is a good pick for anyone who wants a break from hotel lobbies, crowded sessions, and back-to-back networking. Add this to your list if your ideal conference reset involves fresh air, art, and a little quiet before jumping back into the NSPRA action.

5. For Educators Who Want a Meaningful Civil Rights History Stop

Visit: The William Frantz Elementary School site

For those working in education, one of the most meaningful stops in New Orleans is the site of William Frantz Elementary School, where Ruby Bridges helped integrate New Orleans public schools in 1960.

This is not a traditional attraction in the same way as a museum or park. But for school leaders, communicators, and anyone whose work is connected to public education, it is a powerful reminder of the courage, conflict, and progress that shape the history of American schools.

Honorable Mentions

Because New Orleans makes it very easy to add “just one more stop,” here are a few more options to keep on your list:

  • Sazerac House if you want a polished, easy-to-fit-in cocktail history experience.
  • The Ogden Museum of Southern Art if you want an art stop close to other downtown attractions.
  • The New Orleans Pharmacy Museum if you like niche, fascinating, slightly unexpected history.
  • Royal Street galleries if you want a beautiful stroll with art, antiques, and plenty to browse.
  • Frenchmen Street if you want live music and a lively evening outside the most obvious tourist route.
  • Audubon Aquarium if you want something easy near the riverfront.

The main takeaway: leave a little room in your schedule. New Orleans is the kind of city where the best conference memory might happen on the walk between two planned stops.
